Common place book of Mr Simon Paternoster of Hacheston in Suffolk, 1748-1749.

Holograph commonplace book in two notebooks. Each notebook has a title page reading "Common Place Book of Mr Simon Paternoster of Hacheston in Suffolk", with that to the first notebook having "MDCCXLVIII. No 1" at foot, and that to the second notebook having "MDCCXLIX. No 2" at foot. A footnote in the second notebook reveals that the collection originally extended to at least a third volume. The content includes relatively few religious entries, although there are satirical entries entitled "The genealogy of a Papist" and "A receipt to make a Presbyterian in two days", and consists chiefly of legal forms, verse (including a risque acrostick by Rochester, and Isaac Watts' "The disdain"), culinary, medical and veterinary receipts, word games, mathematical tricks and games (the writer seems to have a particular interest in arithmetic) and assorted other snippets, some copied from local and London newspapers (including the Tatler, the Gentleman's Magazine, the London Evening Post and the Ipswich Journal). Most entries are written in a sloping hand, although one legal document is in a hand designed to imitate black letter, and others are in miniscule. Each notebook is concluded by an alphabetical index, written from the end and the other way up to the main text.
